Covid-19 Information and GCCS Updates

June 1st 2020

May 16th – Letter to Families

Re-opening Date

Good Morning Glenora Families,

Health and safety remain the top priority for the organization and this is particularly highlighted during the pandemic as we collectively deal with so many unknowns. This was reiterated in a letter we received from Edmonton Catholic Schools on Wednesday, May 14th. ECSD has decided to continue to keep their sites closed during Phase 1 of the relaunch, not allowing any children back into the school buildings from which daycares operate.

We will continue the necessary facility re-entry planning to accommodate guidelines we receive from the Government of Alberta and AHS, however, our daycare will not reopen until we receive the go-ahead from our landlord. The GCCS Teams is already in communication with ECSD and over the coming days and weeks, we will provide details to ECSD regarding the steps our centre is taking to follow guidelines set out by AHS, bring additional rigor to our operations needed at this time.

Additionally, at this time due to our OSC layout, the room capacity restrictions, and guidelines for centres operating out of  Churches we will be taking more time to consider the ability for opening the OSC during Phase 1.

We understand that with the economy starting to reopen our families will be looking to us for care and support. Our GCCS Team is working to get our centre open for families as soon as possible.

– Nicole Cedeno

May 13th – Edmonton Catholic School Division Letter

Please be advised on May 13, 2020 the Edmonton Catholic School Division has decided not allow any children back in the schools at the stage 1 relaunch. We apologize for the delay in informing you of this change.
The Division is committed to the safety of all staff and children at this time and currently
there are still too many unknowns to allow daycares to re-open on Stage one. We will review all information regarding the Stage 2 relaunch point and will look into the possibility of allowing children back at that point. Rent will continue to be waived while your business is closed and no rent cheques will be processed during this time.

April 30th – Province Relaunch

Good Evening GCCS Families,

As you maybe aware Premier Jason Kenny announce this afternoon The Provinces Relaunch plan that is tentatively scheduled to start as early as May 14th. There are three stages to the relaunch with stage 1 incorporating opening of Daycare and OSC centres.

Child Care Services (Licencing) sent out an email this evening to all the centres regarding the Premier’s announcement stating that since the relaunch plan was just released today they do not have any information at this time to share with centres, but will be updating us soon.

I understand that this is long waited announcement for many families and there will be lots of questions and eagerness to return to daycare. At this time GCCS does not have information regarding what the opening of childcare centre looks like or the restrictions/guidelines that will be required for opening.

Once more information gets released in the coming days we will better understand what this means for GCCS, Educators and Families. We will keep Families update as we get more information.

Thank you for your understanding and patience as we all work through this together,

Nicole Cedeno

April 17th – Educator Update

Gave information on mental health and scheduled check ins with executive director

shared messages from families:

Wow Nicole! You guys are such an amazing bunch. I can’t thank you enough for the shout out for my child’s birthday, and then these wonderful ladies with the dance routine, reading, and more. Please send our love to the whole team and let us know if everyone is ok. We miss our Glenora family and mention every day what a gift we were given when my oldest child first joined. My child says a big hello!
Love you all,

Thank you so much for sending out the videos of Dawn and Ashley and yourself with your daughter last week. My daughter loved them! I have an odd request. My child keeps asking me to make Korean beef like Noriko. I made a recipe I found online and unfortunately it just didn’t live up to the original. Do you think Noriko would be willing to share her recipe? If she’s not available or doesn’t do things like that we completely understand. I just told my daughter that I would ask. I hope you are taking care of yourself and family.

Thank you so much for this. You have no idea. The girls are both missing daycare so much and this is just what they needed. We watched Dawn and Ashley and also the winter video.

This is great! Thank you so much!! My son misses his “school” and friends so much…
Is there anything families can do to help the centre?

Thank you! my child wants to pass along his thanks to Ashely 🙂

Such a lovely message – I have tears in my eyes!  We miss you all terribly and have so appreciated the lovely updates and videos from you. Stay strong and we can’t wait to see our friends again.  Xoxox

Nicole, My wife and I had a gushing session last night about how awesome you and the Glenora crew are. We thank you so much for all that you do. Love to all of the educators!

This is fabulous Nicole. Please send big thanks to all!

April 16th – Weekly Connection Email

Share A Video
Children love to share with friends what they have been doing (or just seeing themself on the computer/phone). GCCS Invites families to send us a quick video that we can add to our weekly community connections email. The videos do not need to be fancy or professional, it can be a “hello”, sharing something special or activity you are planning to do.
Videos will be kept private and only shared with GCCS families

Rainbow Room Daily Words

In the Rainbow Room, the Educators set up a basket with various words for children to start their day.
We wanted to share these words with families so that they can use them in their homes.

April 15th – Letter from the Board of Directors

On March 11th the WHO declared the novel coronavirus a pandemic. On March 16th childcare centres and schools across Alberta closed, gatherings of over 50 people were banned,  and soon thereafter recreation centres and playgrounds were shut down; our world changed immediately.

An emergency board meeting took place on March 16th. It had been called the week prior, before the situation escalated, to discuss closing the center. But with the government having made that decision, the board’s focus turned to creating a plan for the immediate next steps.

We are positioned well should the closure remain in place for months yet and we are preserving start-up funds needed to re-enter our operations when the time is appropriate. Due to previous financial prudence, we have a sizable strategic reserve allowing us months of essential expenses. As of today, we have $220,000 in Guaranteed Investment Certificates and additional cash on hand, with Casino funds still forthcoming. We have been able to cancel all monthly services and have received rent relief from our two landlords through to May 1st.

As you are aware, our staff, except for the Executive Director Nicole Cedeno, have been temporarily laid off.  The centre provided two weeks’ full pay and options of benefits for 90 days.

What we are doing during this time

The board continues to meet regularly providing governance for the center ongoing activities and planning for the future. It is expected the Annual General Meeting, set for June, will need to be moved to the fall.

The center is releasing updates to provide support to families and continue to keep a sense of community during this time.  Look for our updates on Facebook, YouTube and a weekly newsletter.

We are also committed to ongoing communication and connection to our educators to ensure they are supported as best we can with resources available.

You may have heard that some centers were reopened for emergency services workers. We were contacted, but not selected.  The selection was random and at this time there still is capacity in the centers selected and no plans for more centers to be opened.

The closure of the centre has created a hole in our community; one of many. While some yearn for the return to normal it would not be prudent to suggest that, given time, like a light switch, things will return to as they were. They won’t and perhaps they shouldn’t. There will be changes: more sanitization, a more stringent illness policy, possibly revised capacity in rooms or a need to stagger outside play to reduce group sizes.  There will be a lasting impact, but the center and our community will get through it

Through this all one fact rings true. Our community and our center will be as good as we make it. Now more than ever, despite being apart we need to stay connected, committed and caring.

The board is committed to the membership, the children, our educators and our community. We will continue to regularly keep you advised of the center’s status. We welcome your support and input as we make decisions moving forward.

-On behalf of the Board

March 25th – Age specific Resources and Activities

Until we meet again and play, here are some ideas for family fun!

All the rooms have put together some ideas, activities, and favorites for families to enjoy together.

March 24th – Alberta Re-opening of Child Care and OSC for Essential Service Workers

Good Afternoon Families and Educators

As you may be aware Minister Schultz is working to open 15,000 child care spaces in Alberta for Health Care Workers. These centres are being chosen for their proximity to health care facilities. Minister Schultz hoped to have 6,000 these spaces open in the Province by Monday or Tuesday.

On Sunday GCCS received a call from Licensing officer with Children Services inquiring If we would consider opening our OSC for Health Care Workers, and we said yes. The number of spots would be limited as there is only allowed to be 30 people on site and no more than groups of 10 per room. GCCS would not be part of selecting the families, this would be done by families employers.

If selected we would have received an official email later Sunday confirming we had been selected and protocols we would need to meet. We did not receive the email to open, but did receive this email below.

Hello Child Care Community

We appreciate the overwhelming responses that we have had from child care programs willing to provide services for Core Services Workers and their families. After compiling all the information from the calls made over the weekend, we had many Programs willing and able to open which was amazing to see. We wanted to let you know that we were able to secure the spaces the Honourable Minister Schulz promised would be opened for our province for Edmonton and area. We made many phone calls and so we wanted to ensure that communication to confirm whether you are to open or not to open is clear.

If you have been contacted by email yesterday stating that you were one of the Programs being opened please disregard this email. If you have more than one Program and are unsure which program is being opened please contact your Licensing Officer for clarification.

If you were not contacted by email yesterday to confirm you can open we wanted to clarify you were not part of the list being provided to Core service workers. The determination was based on closest proximity of a program to the hospitals and expanded outwards. We want to thank you for your willingness to offer your child care program and should there be a Phase 2 rolled out to support Core Services Workers and their families, we may contact your program in the future.

Thank you again for your support during this extremely challenging time and if you have any questions please contact your Licensing Officer or call our Intake line.

While we were not chosen to open for the initial re-opening of Daycare and OSC in the Province, it is still possible we could for Phase two. GCCS will keep families updated as we receive new information.

March 21st – Confirmed Covid-19 at Glenora Book Fair

Good Afternoon GCCS Families and Educators,

This morning Glenora School was notified of a confirmed case of COVID-19 at Glenora School Book Fair. The individual visited Glenora Book Fair on March 12 between the times of 9:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Glenora School was advised that the risk to the school community is low.

While the communication to Glenora School indicates that the risk to the school community is low we feel it is important that we share this information with our families as we care for children that attend Glenora school and Educators that care for children in the OSC and Daycare programs.

With current information from Health Services regarding social distancing, GCCS will not be encouraging or sharing information pertaining to Child Minding at this time. We understand that this decision may have an impact on both Families and Educators, though when making this decision it was done to ensure the health and safety of our children, educators, and families.

Information sent to Glenora School Families

Notice of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) at Glenora School Book Fair March 12, 2020 between 9 am to 11:30 am

Public Health staff are investigating a case of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) within your child’s school. Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that can cause respiratory illness with symptoms ranging from mild common colds to severe illness. COVID-19 is a new strain (novel strain) of coronavirus that was identified in China in December 2019. This strain has not previously been identified in humans. This strain does not appear to be as severe as other novel coronaviruses, such as SARS.

The virus is passed from person to person by large, respiratory droplets, like from a cough or sneeze. This means that a person would need to have direct contact with droplets from a sick person or surfaces that they have recently touched. Although the risk of becoming infected because of this case from your child’s school is low, we are asking you to please observe your child for the following symptoms for the 14 days (two weeks) from March 12, 2020:
⦁ Fever (over 38˚C);
⦁ New cough or change in an existing cough;
⦁ Shortness of breath.

If your child develops the symptoms as described above within the next two weeks, please self-isolate at home and call Health Link at 811 as soon as possible for assessment prior to seeking care. Registered Nurses are available 24/7 at Health Link to help guide you to the right care provider at the right time and place, and make appropriate arrangements to care for your child safely.

To help minimize spread of any respiratory virus, we recommend the following for your child and everyone in your household:
⦁ Make sure everyone in your household washes their hands with soap and water often. If soap and water are not readily available, you can use alcohol-based hand sanitizer, if hands are not visibly dirty.
⦁ Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands.
⦁ Use a tissue when you cough or sneeze and throw it in a garbage bin lined with a plastic bag. Wash your hands immediately after that. If you don’t have a tissue, sneeze or cough into your sleeve.
⦁ Stay home if you’re sick. If your kids are sick, keep them home from school.
⦁ Clean and disinfect surfaces that are used often and shared by everyone in your home such as door knobs, light switches and bathroom taps.

For further information regarding COVID-19, please call Health Link at 811, and/or view the Alberta Health Services website for COVID-19: https://www.albertahealthservices.ca/topics/Page16944.aspx

March 19th – Closure Update

Dear Families,

This is an unparalleled time in our province’s history and we want to inform you that we are making difficult decisions quickly and with limited information. The Board of Directors and GCCS Administrative Team are working hard to gather further information so that the centre can make the best possible decisions for all our children, employees and families.

The Board met and made the following decisions:
⦁ The fee for March 2020 will be reduced to ½ months fees for child care provided until March 13th, 2020.
⦁ The balance of the fees for March 2020 will be held by the centre as a credit and used towards the first month’s fee upon our re-opening. The withholding of the fees will provide the center with needed cash flow at this time.
⦁ If holding the remainder of March fees causes financial hardship for a family, they can email Nicole and discuss options.
⦁ Starting April 2020 parents will not be expected to pay fees for child care until the centre reopens and becomes operational again.

We have had a number of families inquire about Educators offering child care. Families that would like their information to be shared with Educators may send an email to Nicole indicating what type of care they are looking for (e.g. Full Time, Part Time, occasional days) or if they would like Nicole to pass the information on to a specific individual. Nicole will compile the family’s information (Name/Email/Phone number) and create a list to share with Educators. Educators may choose to be in touch and discuss arrangements with families. Be aware that Educators may choose not to engage in child care. Please be respectful of their decisions.

While these are challenging times, the Board of Directors and GCCS Administrative team appreciate the collaborative community spirit evident in the support we are receiving from employees and the families. We are confident that our centre will continue to flourish after this unprecedented time. Nicole will remain working during this time to deal with centre operations. If you have questions you may contact her by email nicole@glenorachildcaresociety.ca or phone 780-452-1991 (time-on-site may be limited).
Until our next update,

Steve
Board Chair

March 18th – Staff Meeting with Educators

  • discussed impact of Covid-19 on centre, educators, and families
  • Educators were given two weeks of pay, choice to continue their health benefits for three months (educators pay half and centre pays half), and given notice of temporary lay off.

March 17th – Email to Families

Good Afternoon GCCS Families,

As you are aware information is rapidly changing day by day making decision making inherently difficult during these times. We understand families have lots of questions and are seeking answers from us.

Monday evening we had an emergency Board meeting that has helped establish the direction GCCS wants to go in its support of families and Educators. Following our meeting with Educators tomorrow (March 18th) we will send an email to parents with updated information and answers to the questing that have come in.

We thank you for your support and patience as we navigate through this difficult time.

Warm Regards,
Nicole Cedeno

March 16th – Emergency Board of Directors Meeting (Completed via conference call)

March 15th – Closure of Schools and Child Care Facilities

Good Evening GCCS Families,

This afternoon it was announced that all schools and daycare facilities (including Out of School Care) are to close immediately. The safety of our children, Educators and members is GCCS’s top priority, so effective immediately GCCS will be closed until further notice.

At this point, we do not know how long child care centres will remain closed, which leaves us with little information to share with families at this time. Over the next couple of days, we will be meeting with our team and GCCS Board and hope to have more information from AHS regarding the situation to help us assess what this closure means and its impacts to families and Educators.

We will follow up with families once we have more information to share. In the meantime, if you have any questions, I am available by email.

If families have items they would like to retrieve from the daycare I will be onsite at 9 am tomorrow (March 16) available by the regular phone number or email. Please do not try to enter the centre without informing us, fobs may work, but alarms in the school may be on if no one is there.

We hope to see you all soon!
Nicole Cedeno

March 15th – Parenting through Covid-19 Resource

March 14th – Impact, Response, and Action Plan Email

Dear Parents and Educators,

As we move through this rapidly evolving pandemic, GCCS continues to be proactive in its measures to decrease the spread of COVID-19 and keep families informed. Our following procedures are guided by recommendations/information the Alberta Government has released.

Prevent the spread
Influenza and other common viruses remain the most likely cause of a respiratory infection.
To protect yourself and others:
⦁ use good hygiene practices, such as frequent handwashing
⦁ cover coughs and sneezes
⦁ avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
⦁ stay at home and away from others if you are feeling ill
⦁ if you have symptoms, stay home and call ⦁ Health Link 811 for instructions
⦁ COVID-19 symptoms- fever, cough, extreme tiredness (Serious symptoms- difficulty breathing, pneumonia)

To help families prepare, these are the 4 impacts to operations that would result in GCCS closure.

1) Educator absence- If our center has 5+ Educators away, GCCS would not be able to meet the ratios required by Alberta Child Care Licensing resulting in the closure of the center. Notification of closure may be limited due to notice received of educator absences.
The action we are taking to mitigate this:
⦁ Have on-call workers
⦁ Administrative support
⦁ Take measures to stop the spread of sickness
⦁ Follow ⦁ Alberta Guidance for Schools and Child Care Programs: COVID-19⦁

2) Child, Immediate Family Member or Educator Quarantined- If a member of GCCS is placed in quarantine the center will automatically close for 14 days as recommended by AHS. The closure may be extended under the advisement from Health Officials.
Actions we are taking to mitigate this:

⦁ Suspending care for 14 days to families returning from travel outside of Canada or domestic air travel within Canada.
⦁ Educators returning from travel outside of Canada or domestic air travel within Canada will be required to be absent from GCCS for 14 days.
⦁ Not allowing children/Educators to attend when they are sick
⦁ Increasing Cleaning protocols (Administrating GI outbreak protocols)
⦁ Canceling field trips
⦁ Placing Handwashing Signs in all rooms
⦁ Requesting everyone entering a room to wash their hands
⦁ Supplying all rooms with hand sanitizer

3) School Quarantine Closure- In the event, one of the schools we service is placed into quarantine, GCCS would also enter into a 14-day quarantine to ensure we are able to maintain a safe environment for all the children, Educators, families, and the community. Notice of closure may be limited depending on the situation.
Actions we are taking to mitigate this:
⦁ We are communicating with our partner schools about the steps GCCS has been taking and remain in contact with school administrators.
⦁ Keeping up to date with rapidly changing information through ASH
⦁ We are also following the same measures as listed above.

4) School Preventative Closure- We have seen in other provinces that schools are taking preventive measures and closing for a minimum of 14 days. In Alberta, it has been advised that schools do not need to be closed at this time. In the event schools close as a preventive measure, GCCS will be discussing what steps it will take during the emergency board meeting that is scheduled for Monday.

GCCS may also see operations effected due to food supply shortages and personal hygiene products (toilet paper, baby wipes, gloves).
⦁ Food shortage- If GCCS encounters a food supply shortage we may have to supplement with other snacks and lunch options. We will do our best to stick with our menu options as closely as we can.
⦁ Personal Hygiene shortage- The centre has stocked up on our monthly toilet paper, wipes, and gloves along with other products that will last for the next few weeks. We continue to look at ways to ensure we do not experience a shortage of supplies.

In the next couple of days, we will send information to families regarding Parenting During COVID-19 from Dr. Rachel Keaschuk, R.Psych.

Our current policy with this rapidly evolving situation is to assess day by day. Know that we will be doing our best to inform everyone as changes occur and care for the safety of our community

March 12th – GCCS letter to parents regarding new Covid-19 prevention policy and procedure

To GCCS Families,

As you may have heard, yesterday the World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic. To date, there have been 23 confirmed or presumptive cases in Alberta, one of which was a child causing the closing of a daycare center in Calgary. We know this will generate many questions and concerns from families about the actions we are taking at GCCS to provide an environment that is safe, healthy and decrease potential transmission of COVID-19. Let us answer some of those questions and discuss the preemptive measures we will be taking to ensure a safe environment for all children, staff and families.

Current Situation
The World Health Organization (WHO) declared a pneumonia outbreak of the COVID-19 coronavirus a pandemic with sustained risk of further global spread

While the current risk of catching COVID-19 in Alberta is low, Alberta Health advises this may change in the coming weeks. We have put measures in place to minimize the impact of COVID-19 on our center and is taking the following preventative measures:

Prevention and Preparation
GCCS is following the advice of the Public Health Agency of Canada and Alberta Health, and will continue to provide further updates and information as it becomes available
Educators will encourage minimal body contact amongst children (hugs, holding hands, high-fives) and role model handwashing, and covering cough. We will stop the use of toothbrushing for the time being and family-style serving.
Our Educators and Custodial teams have increased the cleaning and sanitization schedule, with a focus on high-touch areas such as door handles, bathrooms, toys and tables. Hand sanitizer have been given to all the rooms, and hallway hand sanitizer is available.

In the case of any presumptive or confirmed case directly impacting a member of the GCCS community, we will work with Alberta Health to respond appropriately which likely result in the closure of the centre. GCCS considers members of the community to be children, Educators, Parents, and Schools that we serve. If the schools that we serve close due to COVID-19, GCCS will also close for a minimum of 14 days or recommended time set out by Alberta Health Services. If the GCCS must cease operations and shut down fees will be adjusted.

In the case of closure, GCCS will try to give as much notice as possible. GCCS may not be able to give sufficient notice and closure may be immediate.
We recommend families also being proactive by talking to their employers and having a plan in place encase child care is not available.

Travel (Suspension of Care)
Over the next few months, Families and Educators may be planning vacations, especially with Spring Break fast approaching. Effective immediately due to increased chances of COVID-19 infection from out of country travel or airline travel within Canada, GCCS will be implementing a mandatory 14-day exclusion from care for children if they or immediate family members have engaged in any of these travel conditions to prevent the potential transmission of COVID-19. Additionally, if Educators at GCCS travel outside of Canada or domestic air travel, they will not be able to return to work for 14 days.
At this time, if there is a temporary suspension due to travel and/or sickness, childcare fees will not be adjusted.

We are committed to keeping you updated about our planning, preparation and any impacts to GCCS operations as the situation evolves. GCCS Board will be holding an emergency meeting to discuss the effects and impacts of COVID-19 to our centre.

Thank you for your support and cooperation as we navigate through this difficult situation,
Nicole Cedeno
